Is Job Seeker’s Allowance means tested? Benefits

Jobseeker’s Allowance is a benefit available to people who are currently unemployed (or working less than 16 hours a week) and looking for work.

You can claim JSA if you’re 18 or over and under State Pension age, as long as you meet the basic conditions. These are:

  • You are working less than 16 hours a week
  • You are available to work full time
  • You are actively looking for full-time work
  • You are not in full-time education
  • You are not claiming Income Support
  • You don’t have an illness or disability which means you can’t work.

What are means-tested benefits?

When benefits are means-tested, it means that how much you earn and how much you have in savings can affect whether you can claim or not.

When you apply for a means-tested benefit you will have to fill in a form with details of your income, savings and other capital.

Your application will be assessed to decide whether your means (how much money you earn/have) is greater than your needs. If your means are greater, your benefit may be reduced or you may not be eligible for it at all.

Generally, for means-tested benefits, amounts vary from person to person as their means and needs are different.

Is JSA means-tested?

There are now three types of Jobseeker’s Allowance. These are:

  • ‘New Style’ JSA
  • Contribution-based JSA
  • Income-based JSA

Both ‘New Style’ JSA And Contribution-based JSA are not means-tested. However, you do need to meet the stated eligibility criteria to apply.

Income-based JSA is means-tested. Within the eligibility criteria, it states that you and your partner cannot have more than £16,000 in savings to qualify for this type of benefit.
